We can also offer a full consultancy service dealing with the safe management and removal of asbestos. This includes Risk Management Assessments and post removal advice and assistance.
For those of you that have heard of asbestos but do not really know much about it, this section is for you. Asbestos is the collective term given to a group of naturally occuring fibrous varieties of a number of silicate minerals. There are two groups of minerals of which, asbestos types occur. These are the serpentine minerals and the amphiboles minerals.
Chrysotile (white asbestos) is only member of the serpentine group minerals. This white asbestos accounts for approximately 95% of the world production of the world production of asbestos. Crocidolite (blue asbestos), amosite (brown asbestos), anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite are all members of the amphibole group.
There are many dangerous health risks that are associated with the substance. Inhalation of asbestos firbre may lead to the following asbestos related diseases:
> Mesothelioma; cancer of the pleura (lining of the lung cavity) or peritoneum (lining of the abdominal cavity).
> Asbestosis (scarring of the lung tissues).
> Lung Cancer (similar to that associated with tabacco smoking).
> Other cancers (cancer of the larynx, oesophagus, stomach, bowel, rectum and kidneys).
> Generally, asbestos related diseases do not appear for a long time following exposure to the substance. Depending upon the asbestos type and magnitude of exposure, the period it takes to notice the effects can range from between 10 and 40 years.
Disabled Access Audits
One of our many services aims to meet the requirements of the Disability Discriminations Act 1995 by undertaking a disabled access audit.
This is a list of the areas that our audit assesses:
> Access and egrass routes into and out of the building.
> Provision of welfare facilities for disabled persons.
> Car parks
> Policies and procedures in place in relation to employment of disabled persons (where appliacable) and visitors to the building.
> Arrangements for evacuating the premises in the event of an emergency situation.
> Measurements of doors, staircases, lifts, welfare facilities etc, will be taken and measured against BS 8300:2001 and Part M of the building regulations to assist in assessing against current design criteria.
> A full report including an action plan will be provided with recommendations on any 'reasonable adjustments' required and a priority rating in which such recommendations should be achieved.
